You may have come across this number before: 7.83 Hz. It’s called the Schumann resonance, sometimes “the Earth’s heartbeat.” Behind this poetic image lies a very real physical phenomenon, measured for more than sixty years. Here’s what you need to know, in simple terms.
What is the Schumann resonance?
About 60 to 90 km (37 to 56 miles) above the ground, the Earth is surrounded by an electrically charged layer of the atmosphere: the ionosphere. Between the conductive surface of the ground and this ionosphere, a kind of huge “cavity” forms all around the planet.
Every second, around fifty lightning strikes hit somewhere on Earth. These discharges emit electromagnetic waves that travel through this cavity. Some wavelengths “fit” exactly into the Earth’s circumference and reinforce each other: that’s the principle of resonance, like a guitar string vibrating on its natural notes.
The fundamental frequency of this resonance sits around 7.83 Hz, meaning 7.83 oscillations per second. Higher harmonics are also observed, around 14, 20, 26 and 33 Hz.
Where does the name “Schumann” come from?
The phenomenon is named after the German physicist Winfried Otto Schumann, who predicted it mathematically in 1952 while teaching at the Technical University of Munich. The first reliable measurements of these waves were made in the early 1960s. Since then, observation stations around the world have recorded these signals continuously.
Is the frequency always exactly 7.83 Hz?
No. 7.83 Hz is an average value. The actual frequency varies slightly, by a few tenths of a hertz, depending on global thunderstorm activity, the time of day, the seasons and solar activity, which alters the ionosphere. You’ll sometimes see charts of spectacular “spikes” shared on social media: these are usually variations in intensity or measurement artifacts, not a lasting change in the Earth’s frequency.
Why is 7.83 Hz so fascinating?
This number has become a symbol in wellness and spiritual circles, for several reasons:
- It connects humans to the planet. It’s a natural rhythm that surrounds us constantly, everywhere on Earth.
- It sits at the border between alpha and theta brain waves (roughly 4 to 12 Hz), commonly associated with relaxation and meditation. This connection is often mentioned, even though science hasn’t established a direct link between the two.
- It evokes a return to what matters. In homes full of screens and electronic devices, many people like the idea of recreating this natural rhythm close to them.
It’s important to stay nuanced: the Schumann resonance is a proven physical phenomenon, but its possible effects on the human body remain debated and little studied. You can include it in your meditation practice as a symbolic reference point, without attributing medical properties to it.
How to recreate the Schumann frequency at home
7.83 Hz is far too low to be heard: the human ear perceives sounds from about 20 Hz. A regular speaker can’t reproduce it either. To emit this frequency, people therefore use a frequency generator fitted with a coil, which emits a very low-intensity electromagnetic field of the same nature as the natural resonance.
That’s the principle behind our sacred frequency generator, Schumann 7.83 · 432 · 528 Hz: it starts directly on 7.83 Hz and emits the signal silently through its two built-in spiral coils. Many people place it on a nightstand, a desk or in their meditation space. To go further, learn how to use a Schumann frequency generator.
In summary
- The Schumann resonance is a natural electromagnetic wave generated by lightning in the cavity between the Earth and the ionosphere.
- Its fundamental frequency is about 7.83 Hz, with slight variations.
- It was predicted by Winfried Otto Schumann in 1952 and measured from the 1960s onward.
- It has become a symbol of connection to the Earth in meditation and wellness.
