After a busy day, slowing down isn’t always easy. An evening routine helps mark the transition between activity and rest. Sound frequencies can be part of it, as a relaxation aid. Here’s a simple 20-minute routine you can adapt to suit you.
Why an evening routine?
Repeating the same steps every evening sends a clear signal: the day is over. A soothing routine helps release built-up tension, quiet the stream of thoughts and set you up for rest in good conditions.
An important note: frequencies are a relaxation aid, not a treatment. If you have persistent sleep problems, talk to a doctor.
The 5-step routine (20 minutes)
1. Turn off screens (1 hour before)
Screen light and stimulating content keep the mind alert. Leave your phone in another room or switch on night mode, and dim the lights around the house.
2. Prepare the space (2 minutes)
Soft lighting, a well-aired room, a cool temperature. If you have one, light a candle or a diffuser. To set up a dedicated corner, get inspired by our meditation space ideas.
3. Calming breath (5 minutes)
Sitting or lying down, breathe in through your nose for 4 counts, hold for 2, breathe out through your mouth for 6 to 8 counts. The long exhale is the key to relaxation.
4. Meditation with a soft frequency (10 minutes)
Play a low, gentle frequency at very low volume:
- 174 Hz, the lowest of the Solfeggio frequencies, loved for its enveloping quality (see 174 Hz and 285 Hz);
- 432 Hz, appreciated for its softness (see 432 Hz vs 440 Hz);
- or simply silence, with the 7.83 Hz Schumann resonance emitted by a generator on your nightstand.
Let your attention rest on the sound and on your breath. Do a body scan: relax your feet, legs, belly, shoulders, jaw and forehead.
5. Gratitude (3 minutes)
Think back to three pleasant moments from your day, even tiny ones. Ending on a positive note helps you leave the day behind.
Practical tips
- Keep the volume low: the sound should be a discreet background, never a distraction.
- Turn the sound off when you go to sleep rather than leaving it on a speaker all night.
- Binaural beats require headphones, which aren’t comfortable for falling asleep: keep them for the meditation phase (see binaural beats).
- The generator emits 7.83 Hz silently through its coils: place it on a dry, non-metallic surface and unplug it in the morning.
In a nutshell
- An evening routine helps mark the transition to rest.
- Screens off, slow breathing, a soft frequency, a body scan and gratitude: 20 minutes is enough.
- Frequencies are a relaxation aid, not a treatment.
